A closer look at the Shoei VFX-W Off-Road Motorbike Helmet
The VFX-W uses the same AIM+ shell composites as the RF1100 and the X12. The lines and ridges that have been built into the shell are done by a technique that Shoei has developed to mold in the ridges and aerodynamic properties on the helmet design. It allows the shell to remain at the same thickness and have the same strengthening qualities to it.
The spoilers that are integrated into the design help with the overall aerodynamics and down-force to give you the best traction possible. The beak on the helmet is adjustable, so you can move it up and down to your requirements. It also uses plastic screws, which are designed to break off in the event of a crash so that the beak will not force your neck back if it catches on something.
The ventilation system is very important on these helmets, as you are going to get hot working the bike around a motocross or off-road track. There are 8 vents in the front. The mouth guard has intakes right at the front, and these are lined with a filter so as to not let dirt and dust come through the vents. You can take the filter out easily enough to clean.
There are vents at the bottom of the Shoei VFX-W Off-Road Motorbike Helmet on each side, which are used to keep the neck cool. Then in the brow of the helmet there are three vents to keep the top of your head cool. Then at the top of the Shoei VFX-W you have two exhaust vents, with another two further back at the bottom of the main ridge. This keeps the air flowing through the helmet to keep the internal environment as cools as possible.
As you can imagine, the inside of the Shoei VFX-W is going to be a sweat haven at times. The helmet uses the 3D-Max Dry lining system, which is twice as effective at wicking sweat away from the inside of the helmet. The lining can be removed very easily, and it is washable and antimicrobial too.
The cheek pads can also be removed with the innovative ring-pull system. This is for if you have a bad fall, the cheek pads can be removed easily, and then the helmet can be removed without pulling on your head or neck.
Final thoughts on the Shoei VFX-W
This helmet has been incredibly well thought out and designed by Shoei. The amount of comfort you get from it when riding is one of the reasons it is such a popular model. It is very light, weighing in at around 3.6 pounds. It also has a very effective ventilation system to help keep your head as cools as possible.
Plus the helmet just looks great too, it is a very aggressive style that really looks good when worn. Overall, the Shoei VFX-W is a very good quality helmet, and certainly one of the best to consider for your off-road rinding.
